The Select Sky command which is part of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic v.11’s new Masking Panel is a blessing for landscape and travel photographers.
When you activate this new AI-based tool, Lightroom Classic (the October 2021 update) will try to isolate the sky in your photograph for you. Lightroom does this by creating a new mask so that you can target brightness, color, and contrast improvements to the sky without affecting anything else in your image.
This kind of masking is made possible by Adobe’s powerful machine learning, AI-based technology which can recognize the subject of your photo or the sky, thereby creating precise selections of either.
Inverting the mask is also possible with the Select Sky tool. This allows you to first select the sky, then flip the mask over so that everything except the sky is selected. When used in combination with other masking tools, Select Sky opens up an interesting array of options.
Masking and the Select Sky command are some of the biggest improvements that we have seen inside of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic in over a decade. New features such as Select Sky are sure to be a huge help, especially to landscape and travel photographers!
