Writing a percent as a decimal
Percent means parts of a whole, actually parts of 100. So, 45% means 45 parts out of 100 total parts.
In order to convert a percent to a decimal, we drop the percent sign and just divide by 100. For 45%, we drop the percent sign and divide 45 by 100, which is 0.45.
But, we really don’t need to do any of that math.
We can just drop the percent sign, move the decimal point 2 places to the left and add in zeros if needed. For example, 12%, drop the percent sign, and 12 is 12.0, so we can move the decimal over 2 places and we get 0.12 as the decimal.
If it was 3%, we again, drop the percent sign, move the decimal over 2 places, add in a zero and we have 0.03 as the final answer.
For 127%, it is the same process, drop the sign, move the decimal point and 1.27 is the decimal value.
