In this video we go through how to add and subtract decimals. We use example problems to explain the process in detail of adding and subtracting decimals from one another.

Decimals addition and subtraction
When adding numbers with decimals, such as 42.13 and 1549.2354, you first need to write the numbers so the decimals are aligned, as you see here. Once you have gotten them aligned, it can be helpful to add in trailing zeros so that each number has the same number of digits to the right of the decimal point. Then go through the process of summing them up, as you see here.
Here is an example of this process with 4 numbers that all have a different number of digits to the right of the decimal point.
Subtracting decimals is very similar to addition. First write the numbers so the decimals are aligned, add in trailing zeros so that each number has the same number of digits to the right of the decimal point. Then go through the process of subtracting them, as you see here.
If you struggle with decimals, it can sometimes be helpful to estimate an answer. Here is an addition and a subtraction problem, and here are the estimate values for each of the numbers. And the estimate values are just rounded to the nearest whole number. You can then add up the estimates and compare those results to the results you got from the actual numbers and make sure the two values are relatively close.
And here are a few more examples of decimal addition and subtraction, along with estimates.
