In this video we discuss what are congruent triangles and what are corresponding angles and sides. We also go through how to write congruent triangles
Transcript/notes
Two or more triangles are congruent if they have the same shape and size. For instance, here are 5 congruent triangles and here are 5 non congruent triangles.
When 2 triangles are congruent, their corresponding angles are congruent, and their corresponding sides are congruent. For instance, here are 2 congruent figures. The tick marks and arc symbols with tick marks show which sides and angles are congruent.
We use this symbol, an equals sign with a tilde above it to signify congruence. So, we would say triangle ABC is congruent to triangle JKL. And when we write this, we list the corresponding vertices or angles in the same order.
Here is a listing of the corresponding angles and corresponding sides. So, angle A is congruent to angle J, angle B to angle K, and angle C to angle L. And, segment AB is congruent to segment JK, and so on.
Since these triangles are congruent, this also means that the corresponding angles are equal, and the corresponding sides are equal. Understanding these principals will help when we need to find certain values of certain figures as you see here, and I will cover this in depth in a future video.
