1 year ago, I began my second attempt at game development and started learning Unity. This is a quick recap of my progress learning unity game development.
I had heard about ‘game engines’ like Unity and Unreal before, but honestly didn’t understand what they did or even how to use them. The first time I opened Unity 1 year ago, I had no idea what to do. I spent my first 2 months learning from YouTube video tutorials on Unity Game Development and C#.
Although progress was slow at first, I eventually had a working prototype in Unity with character customization, procedurally generated worlds, day/night cycles, branching dialogues with NPCs, buildings, and usable items from loot drops.
After realizing my C# code was a mess, I decided to scrap the original Unity project for my game and rebuild everything from scratch. Up until this point, I avoided 3D game development because of how hard stuff like 3D modeling, character rigging, game physics, and 3D lighting are to learn in Unity. 2D is where I was first introduced to video games as a kid, but many of my best memories come from 3D games like Minecraft, World of Warcraft, and Elder Scrolls games. I’m a huge fan of games that offer random discoveries in an open-world environment. Although the 2D game I made in Unity was based around this idea, I couldn’t shake the thought of how my game Revna would look and feel in 3D.
After nearly 3 months of learning how to bake lights, rig character models, and use physics in Unity to calculate all kinds of things in a 3D world, I finally felt like I was making progress.
For now, I’m working with free assets in the Unity Asset store to get a strong understanding of how to handle 3D models once they’re in Unity. Moving forward, my plan is to recreate the current prototype of the game I made, Revna, from a 2D game into a 3D game.
