One of the major things that I believe affects most job seekers is that they cannot really decipher and understand what job adverts are talking about. There is even a subreddit dedicated to the phenomenon. So today I was thinking it would be fun to look at some adverts for jobs and really look to see what they mean… I’ll be looking at indeed.co.uk and indeed.com in this video, as I’ve found in my own experience it to be one of the best job aggregator websites out there. I’ll be searching for frontend developer roles, and then filtering it by experience. Let’s jump into the computer and see what we can find.

The three cities that I want to look at in this video are London, New York and San Francisco. I picked these because I live in London, New York seems to have a good tech scene and San Francisco is Silicon Valley, and if there isn’t any work there, then we have a bigger problem on our hands.

I’d say that my main take away from this exercise is that once you know what to look for and read between the lines of a role you can better understand what a company is looking for and know if it is worth your time to send an application. You can also use the wording in the job advert to better tailor your CV to the role.

I’d also add that once you see a role advertised on indeed, go over to the company website and see if the same job is also advertised there. This means that the company is still actively recruiting for the role, and you’ll have the bonus of your cv going straight to the in house recruiters.

And until next time, thanks for watching!
