I see there is a lot of information out there about being a senior developer but there is not anything out there about being a mid-level developer. As I have gotten to this point I am now discovering stuff that I didn’t know would come up.

Coaching junior developers:
This means sharing knowledge, getting computers and environments setup, sharing keyboard shortcuts and being a big brother or sister when the stress starts to overcome

Brainstorming solutions:
Actually being able to add to group conversations and having your ideas implemented

Being expected to take the lead on things:
Being given tasks or little projects in the team and being expected to lead and deliver them

Bringing in expertise on things:
You will have bought in information from other places you have worked and you may be the only person on your current team who can share that knowledge

Being surprised by your own skills and abilities:
When demonstrating or supporting coworkers, you’ll be shocked by the things that you know that you thought you didn’t know
Learning to be humble

It’s really fun to feel that my skills both as a “coder” and as a team member are growing and that you suddenly don’t feel like the dumbest person around, at least not all the time.
