At least 19 people were killed after heavy rains triggered floods in and around Myanmar's capital city of Naypyidaw. Parts of northern Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar have been battling floods and landslides in the wake of Typhoon Yagi, with the death toll standing at 280 or more.
Two German naval vessels sailed through the Taiwan Strait, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said on Friday, becoming the first German naval vessels to do so in 22 years. China, which claims Taiwan as its territory, said it firmly opposes provocations and endangerment of its sovereignty.
Pope Francis left Singapore for Rome on Friday, after a 12-day trip across Southeast Asia and Oceania. Francis visited Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, East Timor and Singapore.
Dozens of Hong Kong journalists and some of their family members and associates were harassed over the summer, according to the Hong Kong Journalists Association on Friday. Hong Kong was ranked 135 out of 180 territories in Reporters Without Borders’ latest World Press Freedom Index, down from 80 in 2021.
