While Raspberry Pi and OpenWrt dominate the videos on my channel, my (virtual) network experience actually started with OPNsense. With that, I'd like to share my what I know, starting with how to install OPNsense onto a bare metal PC. Personally, I like OPNsense more than pfSense, due to what they stand for, and how the implement the project, like open source, security minded development, ease of use, and frequent updates. OPNsense and pfSense retain many of the same features and functionality, and mostly differ in implementation and beliefs. Because of that, you can use this information, and most OPNsense configuration information, with pfSense. To get started on your journey of BSD based firewalls, we need to install it so we can test it out. In addition, we'll need some basic hardware to install it on. As long as you have an intel based PC, you should be good to go, though, the more ethernet NICs you have, the better. So if you can spend a couple hundred dollars, you can find a good quality generic pc firewall appliance with motherboard expansion slots on eBay, Amazon, or Ali Baba.
