hiiii opabinia time !!
these arthropod dudes had 5 eyes. like, five. eyes. (5️⃣), (🖐), (🕔).
and on top of that.. see that thing that looks like a trunk with a little mouth? well, that’s actually a clawed proboscis, and scientists believe it helped them passing food to their mouth (because obviously their mouth was under their head and facing backwards, of course).
the total length of this dude was approximately 10cm (3,9in), and that proboscis occupied about one-third of that.
and do you know tardigrades? those chunky micro animals also called water bears? well, it is believed that they may be opabinia's closest living evolutionary relatives !! cool.
okay, now i'm just gonna copypaste some fragments from the wikipedia page because i find them hilarious:
“Morphology: Opabinia looked so strange that the audience at the first presentation of Whittington's analysis laughed.”
”The proboscis was striated like a vacuum cleaner's hose and flexible.”
”Zhang and Briggs disagreed with Budd's diagnosis that Opabinia's "triangles" were legs.”
“This was one of the primary reasons why Gould considered that Early Cambrian life was much more diverse and experimental than any later set of animals and that the Cambrian explosion was a truly dramatic event, possibly driven by unusual evolutionary mechanisms. He regarded Opabinia as so important to understanding this phenomenon that he wanted to call his book Homage to Opabinia.”
one can just love strange extinct animals.
one of the reasons i like making these things is to spread the appreciation i have for these living beings. like, life is so weird and awesome and weird and cool and weird. it can fascinate you and at the same time make you laugh and i love that. i hope i can pass that pretty feeling on to you :]
now about the music. i think this is one of the piano - synth tracks i made that represent me the most and that i'm the most proud of. like, i think if i had to show someone what i like creating in my free time i would show them this video. and i think it also complements very well with the drawing :D
i'm writing this to practice some self love i guess, but i find it nice to share it with you. these little projects are a very very very important part of me, and i feel like with each upload i share a little fragment of myself.
i hope you enjoy this little love letter to art and life, and if you like you can comment something !! i know i say this in every video but reading nice comments fills me with a happiness i can’t explain T__T
love u and see ya soon💚🌌
