SNOMED's Expression Constraint Language (ECL) has proven extremely popular and powerful for identifying sets of codes for specific purposes. In essence it is a compact and expressive language that can be used to define a sophisticated ValueSets in terms of hierarchy and concept relationships. We discuss a new proposal, based on ECL, for a simple and general language that can be evaluated against a generic FHIR CodeSystem.

This session looks at:
The features of ECL and the expressive power it offers beyond the limits of ValueSet.compose
The advantages of ECL when embedded in the URI of an implicit ValueSet for dynamism, performance, and caching
The initial proposed syntax for the new language
The initial proposed feature-set
Examples of use with respect to code systems like LOINC and RxNorm
