Here is what makes Christianity absolutely unique! Its the best news you could ever receive in your life. I was privileged to attend the University in South Africa called Wits University where I studied religion As we were studying all the major world religions I discovered a foundational difference between all major world religions and Christianity! I saw how all religions required of their followers to qualify themselves with their God whereas Christianity was the exact opposit where God took the initiative to qualify people with Him.
This is done in Christianity by the concept of righteousness. It is a Biblical term. Where God says that He gives you His righteousness as a gift. that means it's not earned and it's not deserved. In other words, you cannot work your way and act your way and behave your way into a relationship with God or into a place where you qualify with God. It has everything to do with what God decided to do for you. And it's not because you were good. It is because He loved you.
The Bible says, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son Jesus Christ so whoever believeth in Him may have eternal life". That's John 3:16 the most famous verse in the Bible. But if you think about that verse He says for God "so" loved the world. That "so" speaks of the size of God's love. The greatness of God's love was so intense That He would do what He needed to do in order to qualify you with himself. Even though you were an enemy of God He gave His Son in order to qualify you so that you could be right with Him. So you might say, "well Jacques what does it mean to be righteous?".
Let us pretend righteousness is a coin. It has two different sides to it. The 1st is to have righteousness is to have right standing with God. Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden prior to them sinning had relationship with God. They were close to God. There was no spiritual inferiority between them. and a holy perfect God. but sin entered and when sin entered that relationship was completely broken. There were separated from God. Jesus came to deal with that sin. So that our relationship with God can be reconciled once again. So here on the one side of the coin Righteousness is to have right standing with God. Where there is zero spiritual inferiority between you and a perfect God.
On the other side of the same coin of righteousness. Righteousness means to be given rights. To be given rights to the family name. For instance, if my wife and I decided to adopt somebody and we adopt a child into our family. We give them the rights to our family name. They will become heirs within our family. The Bible says you and I we were given the right to become children of God. God is no longer our judge. God is now our Father !
The Bible says we have become equal heirs with Christ Jesus. Equal heirs with Him where we inherit as He (Jesus) inherits God's promises. That is a crazy thought ! This all happened on the Cross. This is why the Cross is such good news. There is so much hope in this. Because in II Corinthians 5:21, I want to read it to you. So that you can see what happened on the Cross. It says, "God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us". (talking about Jesus)
God made Jesus who had no sin to become sin for us. Our sin was imputed onto Christ as He was hanging on the cross. It was transferred onto Christ Then it says, "So that in Him (in Christ), we might become the righteousness of God". Can you see as my sin and your sin was imputed unto Christ at the same time. God's righteousness was imputed unto us. Its called the double imputation.
This is why the gospel of Jesus Christ is called the good news. Not only were you made innocent, all your sins were forgiven but you were given their rights to Sonship. This is how God qualified us with Him !
