Why did Jesus come to earth? You know why that question is so important? If we get that answer wrong, we misinterpret the whole entire life of Christ. So why don't you give it a minute and let's explore why Jesus came to earth.

If somebody sees Jesus as somebody who just came to teach morals then they would interpret his entire life as that of an exercise in ethics. If they saw his life or that he came to fix the environment they would see his life as being something that would help nature and help the world and help the environment and animals and trees and so forth. If they believed that he came to just established manners then they would equate him as somebody like a Martha Stewart or even the Queen of England.

If they see him as somebody who just came to coach us and to motivate us and to inspire us they would equate him as somebody like a you know as a motivational speaker or they would think of him as somebody who would go on TEDx and motivate people worldwide. But what we have to do is establish why he came to earth so that we can come to him for the same reason. In 1 Timothy 1 verse 15 the Bible says (Paul speaking to Timothy) "how true it is and how along that everyone should know it that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners". He came to do what save sinners.

In John 1 verse 29 the Bible says, "the next day John the Baptist saw Jesus coming to him and said behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world". This is why he came to take away the sin of the world not to come and heal us from low self-esteem or save us from hardships in life necessarily. He came first and foremost to save us from our own sin. Thomas Watson said this "until sin be bitter, Christ will not be sweet". In Matthew 1 verse 21 the Bible says, "she will bear a son and you shall call his name Jesus. For he will save his people from their sins". Not from difficult situations necessarily but from sins. This is why he came first and foremost.

Martin Luther says, "if you see yourself as a little sinner you will inevitably see Jesus as a little Savior". Friends it's so important for us to know why Jesus came so that we can go to him for the same reason. Adam and Eve had a relationship with the Father. Sin entered and it broke their relationship with God the Father because God is so holy he cannot be in relationship with sin. So sin broke their relationship then God sent Jesus to deal with the sin that was separating them; so that they can once again be reconciled.

In the same way when we come to Christ we come to Jesus over the sin issue. We put our faith in him over the fact that he is able to pay for our sins. That's why we come to him and I'm really concerned that a lot of people only come to Christ because they have fallen on hard times instead of the fact that they've recognized that their sin has broken their relationship with God the Father. So I want to encourage you today to come to Christ that way. Put your faith in Him. What does that mean? I put my faith in him, I trust that the payment that he made is sufficient to remove my sin, to forgive me of my sin so that God the Father and I can be united once again. You see Jesus said, "I am the way the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father but through me". That is what this means. The Bible says, "now you work out your own salvation with fear and trembling".
