I can’t speak for travel in all of Japan, but this has been my experience in...
...Hokkaido, Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, villages on the Kumano Kodo, and villages along the Nakasendo Way.
My arms and leg tattoos could be easily covered but if I needed to cover my hand that would be a little more difficult.
I’m still not sure if I just got lucky with the onsens I went to because I still see a lot about people saying you can’t. There are lists on the internet that have compiled names of gyms, pools, beaches and onsens that are tattoo friendly.
Overall my experience has been good! I’ve gotten more compliments than weird stares :)
