Healthcare and payor organizations have many reasons to transmit data on a population of patients, such as moving clinical data into an analytic data warehouse, sharing data between organizations, or submitting data to regulatory agencies. Today, bulk export is often accomplished with proprietary pipelines, and data transfer operations frequently involve an engineering and field mapping project. The FHIR Bulk Data Access IG is a joint effort by HL7, the Argonaut FHIR Accelerator, and the SMART project to bring the FHIR standard to bear on these data export challenges. To date, the API has been deployed in production by organizations including CMS, and has been incorporated into clinical software products from Epic, Firely, Google, IBM, Microsoft, and Smile CDR.
This session covers the FHIR Bulk Data technical specification, describe how it's being used today, and walk through improvements added in the recently published version 2. .
