THE WHO - Cassingle
This is The WHO. You know, "The World Health Organization", THAT Who. What? No, not that World Health Organization, the other World Health Organization. This one right here, The WHO. But no, not the other Who. This WHO. Why, did you have something else in mind?
To clarify, this is The WHO -- The World Health Organization, longhand -- from Montreal. I mean, you have to at least appreciate the gusto here; this band is appropriating two pre-existing names at once. That's just... impressive. But moreover, the band's music has gotten equally as impressive over the past few months, with the band originally sending me their demo tape in mid-August of 2019. A "demonstration" it was: back then, the group had little presence beyond the recordings issued in this aforementioned tape, which presented five of their songs with... about the lowest possible fidelity one could imagine ( • The World Health Organization - DEMO ). As complementary as it may be to the band's rose-tinted rock 'n' roll flamboyance, I unfortunately felt some of the impact of their vibrant, ostentatious showmanship was lost in this conversion to magnetic tape. This has thankfully been remedied with the group's latest releases, with spectacular acuity.
This cassingle, released just last month, was made to coincide with the release of the band's merchandise. Essentially, you buy a piece of their merch and you get a complementary download link to this cassingle. Simple. I would say that's a pretty killer bundle deal, because this cassingle is a fantastic appetizer to The WHO's proficiency for intense, uncompromising rock 'n' roll dynamism. It's like a 1970's proto-punk band walked into a modern punk venue, hated what they heard, and proceeded to go back to their garage to record something better. The tight, jittery drumbeats, providing sporadic punctuation to the guitarist's flashy technical dexterity, firing on all cylinders as he belts out lick after flaming lick, tangibly dripping with grease, acidity and fuzz, providing a glorious inferno of retrograde garage rock sensibilities to inflame the vocal performances further -- The WHO knows damn well how to rock. I expect nothing but great things out of this band. Great, great things.
