Okay. Forget about "Rugrats-core": Goblin-core is now my new favorite genre.
You are listening to "Shinner" -- or rather, a goblin-esque reimagining of this New Jersey-based psych-garage act. It's... a little bit confusing at first, but essentially, "Goblins vs. Humanoids Vol. 1" is a thematic, tentative EP from a two-piece group that generally resides in the realm of mellow, lo-fi, stripped-down psychedlic rock, as best demonstrated in the group's latest release, "Bad Taste" (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list.... As I'm sure you've immediately discerned, there's nothing "mellow" or "stripped-down" about this album in the slightest. I suppose you can consider this project "Shinner-in-name-only", considering the drastic tonal shift in the group's performance that bears little resemblance to their proceeding efforts. Or, alternatively, you could pretend that a duo of goblins have fashioned leather garments from the band member's flesh and have assumed their respective roles in Shinner, beating their instruments with impossibly-sized femur bones for the duration of this EP's four-minute runtime. I'm more partial to the second theory, because there is simply no better word to describe these songs than "goblin-esque".
Incorporating a profusely-scuzzy guitar tone -- sounding more like somebody mistakenly mic'd up their neighbor's car exhaust rather than an amplifier -- and punchy, toe-tapping garage punk rhythms -- its intoxicating swing driven by physical and mechanical drumbeats alike --, Shinner corporealizes their goblin theming through guttural vocal grunts, groaning somewhere beyond these impenetrable walls of sound with a minimal amount of musicality. But "Goblins vs. Humanoids" manages to ascend this thematic fixture, providing a loosely-knit collection of recordings that rolls over the senses like an auditory steamroller, bombarding your ear canals with a relentless tidal wave of rudimentary garage punk hooks, playfully embellished with its fair share of contorted bends and electronic keystrokes. This album is simply... vile, simply obscene; and just I can't get enough of it.
Album art was done by yours truly. It was an excuse to draw a goblin creature. Just a little reminder to everyone that I'm open for commissions and stuff. I'm a little more selective with the projects I choose to work on these days, but I'm available nonetheless. Email me if you're interested.
