Relief valves are an important way to protect your pump and your process – here’s how they work:

If the downstream piping becomes blocked, pressure can build and lead to all sorts of mayhem - like a stalled motor or a damaged pump.

As pressure at the valve inlet increases, it will eventually reach it’s cracking pressure. The spring compresses, moves a poppet, and a small amount of liquid begins to bypass toward the pump’s suction side.

If pressure continues to build, the valve will open even further and can eventually divert 100% of the pump’s capacity if needed. This is know as “full bypass pressure.”

When the pressure returns to normal, the spring moves the poppet and closes the valve – returning the pump to full capacity.

The Viking Pump internal relief valve is standard on most models and provides over-pressure protection without additional piping and space.
