Time to fix another Sega Game Gear hand held console. It is a well known fact that the capacitors in these handhelds are failing and this one is no exception. Last repair I used normal electrolytic capacitors. These are polarity sensitive meaning they have to be placed in the correct polarity to work.

This time I am repairing the Game Gear using SMD capacitors. This particular kit used is from Retro Six (no affiliation) and only requires three different values of surface mount capacitors for the main board and the sound board and three regular electrolytic capacitors for the power board.

Fitting these surface mount capacitors makes the board look a lot neater and another advantage is that they are not polarity sensitive meaning they can be fitted either way around.

Also tried something different with this video, just using the natural sounds and not adding my usual voiceover and background music.

Useful resources:

No affiliation but found this kit on eBay and it is made by retro six. The kit price is very reasonable at around £6.50 ($8.20) and covers all versions of the Sega Game Gear motherboards. If you have a large amount of Game Gears to repair and want to go this option then may be cheaper to buy each capacitor size in bulk. The kit does come with all the capacitors needed.
