Motion Graphics 22 - Prism Falls
The "A Monster Calls" movie trailer got my attention on so many levels. It’s the story of a boy whose imagination and drawings come to life, featuring a powerfully evocative soundtrack, a visually magnificent monster, and brilliant film credits drifting over a backdrop of flowing inks and watercolors. The moment I saw the trailer, I wanted to make my own version of credits with flowing inks and watercolors. The problem was I didn’t have the first idea how to create animated, flowing watercolors. From my limited experience with motion graphics and visual effects, I knew that learning to create fluid simulations with software such as RealFlow or Houdini FX would require a huge learning curve. Then, I remembered that I own an easy-to-use painting program called Rebelle from Escape Motions. I wondered if I could flow paint in Rebelle, so I began experimenting. The results were promising, yet the wet pigments moved much too slowly. That’s when I got the idea that I could record the slowly flowing pigments using Screenflow software, then speed them up using After Effects’ Time Stretch feature. To my delight, it worked! Through exploration, I also discovered that overlaying a craquelure texture from one of the French Kiss collections added depth and richness to the credits.
