We're back with another one-song session from Ruby The Hatchet, a.k.a the heavy psyche rock pride of New Jersey. The quintet stopped by EarthQuaker HQ while on tour to lay down a couple of road-tested new songs. Here we offer "Primitive Man." It's a midtempo heavy groover featuring a pulsing melodic bass line from Lake Muir, filling out his bass tone with the Pyramids stereo flanger and the Westwood overdrive. Guitarist Johnny Scarps adds fine rocking riffage with sonic assistance from the Warden, Bit Commander, Swiss Things, and the Afterneath. Finally, organist Sean Hur frosts the groovin' tune with layers of that classic 70s space-rock organ with a dash of Avalanche Run.
Oh, It's a headbanger for sure.
Singer Jillian Taylor adds a touch of Avalanche Run and Afterneath to her powerful, bluesy vocals and harmonizes with drummer Owen Stewart.
"Primitive Man" is one of three tracks on Ruby The Hatchet's upcoming "Live at EarthQuaker" EP, which also includes another new song, "1000 Years," recorded at EQD HQ, plus a raucous studio recording of Uriah Heep's classic "Easy Livin."
The "Live at EarthQuaker" EP will release on April 22 and is a small taste of the band's next full length to be released on their new home, Magnetic Eye Records, in 2022.
