In this episode, Whitney shows you how to move your Wix website over to a self-hosted WordPress site.

First, why would you want to move your site from Wix to WordPress? While making a site on Wix is simple and fast, the way the service is set up means you do not technically own your content; Wix does. This is because Wix is a closed service. Moving your site to a self-hosted website means you own all of your content, and are also able to add new features simply and for free.

To begin, you’ll need to first sign up for a WordPress site and get a host. You can easily buy a domain, get a host, and download WordPress by going to a site like GoDaddy. After you have done this, you’ll need to pick a theme for your website.

Now that your site is set up, it’s time to get your posts from Wix. This is by no means a clean-cut, exact transfer, since Wix is a closed platform and doesn’t make it easy to export content, but is the best possible solution.

We will be accomplishing this transfer through your Wix RSS file.

To access the file, add /feed.xml or /blog-feed.xml to your Wix website URL. If you don’t have a custom domain, you can find your RSS feed at username.wixsite.com/blogname/feed.xml or username.wixsite.com/blogname/blog-feed.xml, where your username is your Wix username and the blog name is the name of your blog.

This should bring you a page full of code. Right click and select Save As, and save the file to your computer.

Next, we will be returning to WordPress. Select Tools, and then Import. Click Install Now under the RSS heading. A link at the top of the page will appear that says Run Importer. Select the link.

Now, choose your Wix site’s xml file you saved to your computer and click Upload file and import.

To check and make sure your blogs have successfully transferred, navigate to Posts, then All Posts and click View underneath each post. While this transferred text, it did not transfer images, as your images are hosted on Wix. To fix this, install and activate the Auto Upload Images plugin. After downloading the plugin, you’ll need to resave each post that contains images, and the plugin will import those images. You can easily do this by Selecting All and then clicking Update.

Now that we’ve imported posts, we need to import the pages. You will have to recreate each page in WordPress one by one.

First, go to the page that you want to move to WordPress. Highlight all of the content except the page title, then copy.

Now, go to your WordPress and click Pages, then Add New. Fill in the page title and paste the content. You’ll need to add any images or videos manually. When you’re ready, click Publish. This won’t work for a contact page, however. You can download a contact form plugin to recreate your contact page.

Next, you’ll need to create a main navigational menu. If you go to Appearance and then Menus, you can type in a name for your menu; we can name it Main Menu. Now, you can add whatever pages you want to include in your main menu by clicking Add to Menu and select the Menu Settings as Primary.

Now, you should have a very basic WordPress site with a theme, pages, posts, and a menu.
