How To Mask Shapes in Adobe After Effects CC 2018 - per default, the rectangle tool will create new shapes when used on other shapes and not work as masks, like on other assets like compositions.

To change that simply toggle the mode from "tool creates shape" to "tool creates mask".

Now you can use the rectangle tool to drag over a shape and it will create a mask just like with any other asset in After Effects.
