In this lesson, we will explore a period sometimes referred to as the “long fourteenth century” (1300-1450 CE), a time which saw the deaths of millions of people across Eurasia, the end of the Mongol Empire, the fragmentation of the Christian Church and a war which would last more than a century. It began with the Great Famine of 1315-17 in which widespread crop failures and cataclysmic weather patterns led to mass starvation across northern Europe. It was followed just a generation later by the Black Death, a plague which killed millions of people from China to Europe. The Papacy which had become powerful during the High Middle Ages grew weaker during this period while kings became more powerful. Eventually, the institution of the Papacy fractured completely during the Great Western Schism (1378-1417) which saw multiple people claiming to be pope at the same time, each with different kingdoms supporting their claim. In final crisis of the late Middle Ages, we’ll examine the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) between England and France which began as a medieval conflict and ended as a modern one with gunpowder and artillery.
