In this unit, we will begin our examination of the High Middle Ages and the social, economic and religious transformation known as the 12th Century Renaissance. We will see how during the 11-12th centuries, the medieval economy expanded due to an increasing population. This led to the resurgence of cities and long distance trade. The first century of the High Middle Ages was also marked by the reformation movement of the Church. At the centre of this movement was the emergence of great monastic empire of Cluny and the growing power of the papacy which would culminate with the Investiture Conflict. We’ll also see the slow decline of the Byzantine empire, and the rise of new outside powers in the Islamic world from Saharan Africa and grasslands of central Asia.

The textbook for the course is Barbara Rosenwein's A Short History of the Middle Ages:

It's a great introduction to the Middle Ages and very easy to read with lots of great maps, pictures and primary sources.

For those who are interested (I am often asked by teachers), the microphone that I use to record my videos is the Blue Yeti USB microphone.

It's on the pricier side but a great investment. If you are serious about having great sound for your lectures, it is worth every penny.
