Logic DMD | How to Create Layered, Velocity Triggered Multi-Sampled Drum Kits and Why?

The best sounding acoustic drum kits have multiple samples, layered and triggered by velocity ranges, but most drum sample players only play one sample at a time. Even Drum Machine Designer seems designed to play 1 sample in each of the 48 cells. Yes, the loudness of each sample is controlled by your midi velocity, but it's the same sample louder or softer. This is fine for most drum kits, but a real acoustic drum changes it's sound the harder you hit that drum. To capture this you need each kit piece sampled many time at different strengths, and as you send higher velocity values it should trigger different samples.

In this video, I demonstrate how to build a layered, multi-sampled kit in DMD with velocity ranges, step-by-step. Then I compare that to some 3rd party drum instruments that have layered multi-samples including EZ Drummer 3, Superior Drummer 3 and Spitfire Audio Abe Laboriel Jr Drum Kit. I finish by showing how to clean-up your multiple drum samples before building the kit, and discuss why this effort is worth all the work.
