Height maps! They can be used for many different things in 3D and VFX, but one of the coolest things I've found in Blender is using an animated height map to displace a mesh in such a way it looks like it's simulating liquids dripping or melting on a surface.
Today you will learn how to make ice cream melt on the side of an ice cream cone. We will start by creating an animated mask in Adobe After Effects 2022 with the cell pattern effect and turbulent displace. Then we create three unique textures in Substance Painter or Blender for each liquid or "flavor" in this case that you want to displace on the mesh.
Back in Blender create three different shaders with each texture assigned. With some mix shaders, color ramps and math nodes we mix everything together to make them blend on top of each other and with the help of the mask we made in AE we can now displace the mesh based on where the mask is one the UV space.
By doing this you don't have to bake out a liquid simulation which can sometimes be computer intensive.
In this easy step by step tutorial you will learn more about height maps and displacement in Blender 3.0 and the many ways to use them.
Hope you enjoy! 😊
