“Amount of perfect waves? Mind boggling.” — Brett Barley, Behind the Maps: The Accidental Treasure

The thing about any successfully documented surf trip — especially when it’s a score on the level of Maps to Nowhere Ep#2, The Accidental Treasure — is that you can end up with way more amazing footage and interviews than can be elegantly crammed into one 22-minute edit. In this series, Behind the Maps, we’re going to offer up a little more insight into what went on behind the scenes of each trip.

For one...it appears that absolutely no one on this trip did any previous research on the joint, even though they were sorta told (to an extent) where they’d be going. But maybe there’s something to that. In a world where our phones can literally finish our sentences, perhaps the element of blind surprise is what we’re craving deep down inside. Certainly, a large part of the reason why we travel such great lengths for waves.

For two...does anyone on planet earth know how to beachbreak better than Outer Banks’ Brett Barley? Name someone else. We’ll wait...

While we do, Barley offers up this bit of wisdom: “I love the idea that there are waves all over the world barreling and spitting — unridden — all the time.” Us, too.
