It’s always strange when a great surf zone just kinda stops dead in its tracks, right when it’s supposed to be pumping. Just such a thing happened this winter along the renowned reefs of Victoria’s Surf Coast. The magical combo of long range SW swell and gusty offshore winds so typical of the area kept trying to spark up and not quite making it. Then in one week, right as the seasons swung into September, everything clicked. Cold winds, open skies, and a seemingly endless series of back-to-back swells poured down the reefs, stoking out everyone from a few handfuls of visitors to a vast array of very patient local surfers, who finally got the goods. And kinda wore themselves out in the process. As Bells surfer/coach/mastermind Cahill Bell Warren said afterward: “The whole town’s exhausted.” Here’s why.
