The thing about any successfully documented surf trip — especially when it’s a score on the level of Maps to Nowhere Ep#1, The Lost Atoll (watch here! • Maps to Nowhere Episode 1: The Lost A... ) — is that you can end up with way more amazing footage and interviews than can be elegantly crammed into one 22-minute edit. In this series, Behind the Maps, we’re going to offer up a little more insight into what went on behind the scenes of each trip.
For example: how shallow was that reef? (Very! “Like shorebreak.”) How sharp is that coral? (Ditto. Bring flip flops.) How did did the trip come to be? (Ask Brett Barley! He pulled the short straw.) Who in the heck is Matt Rode? (He’s committed to finding perfect, remote waves at their best.) What’s next? “The Accidental Treasure”, launching April 5th. Stay tuned.

Note: “Maps to Nowhere” is a series about the lengths surfers will go to surf perfect, empty waves. The spots you’re about to see are not new discoveries — but they are (nearly) perfect, and they are empty. The locations are not disclosed because our belief is that the journey is at least half the fun — and sometimes, over half of the travel time. We thank the many local community members that helped make our adventures a success.
