This video tutorial shows you how shaders work, especially focused on the 2 shaders that you can access in gamemaker studio. The vertex shader and the fragment shader.

Shaders are basically a way to change the graphical output by using the graphics card.

The basic function of the vertex shader is to take the vertices which contain their space coordinates, color and their coordinates on the texture/texture pages. This shader can change the geometrical/shape of the objects that are being formed by the vertices which are in principle a bunch of triangles. These changed information are passed later to the fragment shader which translates it into pixel values (if changed). The fragment shader is being used to create color distortions, bloom effects, lence flares, shadows and more.

This video provides the basic principle how this works in principle and how it can be used in gamemaker studio.
