This visual effects video tutorial shows you in general how damage/text pop-ups work and how it is being done in Rogue Legacy 2.
The idea is to dissect all parts of damage/text pop-ups, why they work, how movement and color define the information being shown to the player. The first part of a text pop-up is the color, that signals with it beneficial or adverse effects. Red is a warning color and therefore used a lot for damage being done to the player/enemies. The movement being a bouncing off the player/enemy signals something is being taken away from the target, jumping up and landing back in the target conveys collecting. Speed and text size also play a part of the impact/strength.
Trivia: Damage number have been historically not been a used in video games. This elegant method has become recently (a bit overused) a standard practice.
