Tutorial – Getting Started with Host Sync Transport Controls & BPM
When I initially jumped into Voltage Modular, the first couple of questions I had were how to start and stop its sequencers with my space bar, just like in my DAW, and how to get the sequencers and arpeggiators to sync with Ableton Live’s BPM. Luckily, it wasn’t too difficult to figure out.
I figured it would be a cool thing to go ahead and make a video tutorial on the process, explaining as much as I could along the way to help anyone else looking to jump into virtual modular shenanigans.
Syncing Voltage Modular with the DAW Transport Controls
This one is super easy and straight forward.
Any sequencer in Voltage 2, including the free 8 Step Sequencer in Nucleus, will have a start and stop button and a corresponding patch slot available.
In the I/O bar at the top of the GUI, which is automatically loaded in every instance of the Voltage plugin, there is a section called “Transport”. There you will find 4 patch options; Play, Stop, Sync Out, Play Gate.
We want to connect the Play here with the Play on the Sequencer and the same for the 2 Stops.
That’s it. Now, when you smash that space bar, or hit play in your DAW the 8 Step Sequencer should start too and when you stop everything the 8 Step Sequencer will stop too.
Syncing Voltage Modular with the DAW BPM
To sync Voltage Modular’s sequencers, LFOs, Arpeggios and everything else with the DAW’s BPM we will need to add the Sync Divider Module. Don’t worry, this module is also a part of the Free Voltage Modular Nucleus 2 download.
There are 3 patching areas on the module and we need to fill them up with the appropriate routing.
The Sync In on the Sync Divider goes to the Sync Out in the Transport controls from the last part of the tutorial. This is feeding the BPM / Tempo / Clock information into the module.
In modular speak, Clock is BPM or Tempo. Therefore, we need to patch the “Clock Out” at the bottom of the Sync Divider module to the EXT CLK (External Clock) on the 8 Step Sequencer. We also need to turn on this function by hitting the EXT button.
Now, we have successfully fed the DAW’s BPM into Voltage Modular and we can use the Sync Dividers tempo options to choose how to divide up that BPM.
Now, there is one more thing to do. Right now, as we start and stop the 8 Step Sequencer, the last known position is where it will start each time. We want it to reset and start again every time we hit play. To do that, we simply need to route the Play output from the Transport controls into the Reset input on the Sync Divider.
This acts as a retrigger. Every time a play signal comes in, not only does it start the 8 Step Sequencer, it also resets it to make it play from the beginning.
