The answer is no! ❌
Watercolor pencil sets can be incredibly expensive and this can be a deterrent for lots of people wanting to start with this versatile medium.
The fact of the matter is that you can create AMAZING watercolor pencil paintings with student-grade sets from reputable brands. 👩🎨

A lot of my watercolor pencil pieces were created with Faber-Castell’s Goldfaber Aqua line, which is this brand’s student grade option. 🫢
The only professional grade watercolor pencil set I own, is a 12 color set from Derwent, and I haven’t used it in a while. 🤫
👉If you’re curious about trying watercolor pencils, look into (quality) student grade sets, or consider buying a professional set with less colors.
Remember that more colors IS NOT necessarily better.
You can paint pretty much anything from landscapes, to still life, to animals with 12 colors or less. 🧿
