Morro Strand State Beach Campground is located along the California Central Coast, just north of Morro Bay, CA, and the iconic Morro Rock. You can get here by traveling along California Highway 1, more generally referred to as PCH (Pacific Coast Highway).
This campground is fairly bare bones, but that is outweighed but its incredible location!! Most notably the campground does not offer showers. There are however paths directly off of the campground that go directly to the beach. Please refrain from creating your own path or going on undesignated paths. There are a lot of fences that have been torn down at campsites with unauthorized beach access. There are a lot of conservation efforts underway and it is important to let the natural fauna grow undisturbed. Each site has a fire ring and a picnic table.
The beach is wide and flat with soft sand. We have visited this beach several times and have found it is not typically very populated with beach goers. If you want to visit this spot for a day trip, there is beach parking available at the entrance to the campground. The waves were gentle and shallow during our visit, but there were a lot of surfers out farther. There were also a lot of signs warning of ripe tides.
Do be aware, this area tends to be cooler so bring plenty of clothing to keep stay warm!
There was a good mix of tent campers and RVers. We tent camped and found the ground was very very hard at our site making it difficult to insert tent stakes. Fortunately, we had metal stakes and a hammer. Be sure to add these items to your camping packing listing if you’re tent camping.
Be sure to book this campground early so you can snag a reservation! They become available 6 months before your travel dates!
Are you wondering, " what is the best campsite at Morro Strand State Beach campground?"
You'll find most of the camp site numbers featured within the video. General considerations when selecting your campsite:
-- The row closest to the ocean has absolutely incredible views from many of the sites. These sites do seem to be smaller, and sandier.
-- The middle row would be my last choice, but if it is all that is available I would still take it. These are extremely bare and feel more like sleeping in a parking lot.
-- The inner most row (closest to the street), is where we have stayed and we loved it! There is a small hill with paths along it on the backside of the campsite. All of the kids had such a great time playing together on it!
-- Take note of where the garbages are located! A few of the spots are VERY close to the garbages and have the risk of smelling and of having a lot of foot traffic.
I highly recommend packing these items for this location:
Metal Stakes
Mallet or Hammer
Warm Clothing
Water Sandals for tide pooling
Hand soap (our bathroom was out so we were glad to have our own!)
