Barret's shot shatters the cracked wall, revealing a sinister truth – a hidden lab crammed with test pods. Tifa and Barret exchange a grim look, the unspoken question hanging heavy: once people? Cloud knows the answer's grim stain too well. Memories of his own pod, his own enforced participation in Shinra's twisted experiments, flash before his eyes. Tifa sees his turmoil and touches his arm, but their moment is shattered. A swarm of ethereal figures, spectres hungry for souls, engulfs the group, dragging them away from the chilling discovery.

Thrown Back to the Surface:

Ejected from the Underdark depths, they land in a harsh heap near Wedge's razed home and the gaping maw leading back to the site. Wedge and his ginger feline companion cling nearby, disoriented. "What the hell was that?!" Barret roars, scooping Wedge into a fireman's carry. Cloud stares into the abyss, its secrets churning in his mind. Tifa nudges him, cradling Wedge's frantic cat. "Let's move," she whispers, urgency lacing her voice.

Broken Promises and Unflinching Resolve:

Barret sets his jaw. "I'll stay and keep looking for Biggs and Jessie," he growls. "You two take Wedge back to Aerith's." Cloud hesitates, guilt etching lines on his face. "I saw them, Barret," he says, voice low. "Badly hurt, near the pillar." Barret's fist clenches, knuckles white against brown skin. "They're gone, Cloud," Tifa interjects softly, "returned to the planet." But the words hold little solace. "No," Barret roars, shaking his head. "They were supposed to come back to us! Not like this! We can't give up on Shinra, not while they hold Jessie and Biggs. They'd never forgive us." His voice cracks, pain warring with defiance. "I'll carry that burden," he mutters, and with a shared nod, they turn away, Wedge cradled between them, a silent beacon of their unyielding resolve.

As Cloud's party returns with a wounded Wedge, Elmyra cares for him. The discovery of a secret Shinra lab prompts the party to rescue Aerith. Elmyra, torn, needs time to contemplate.

AVALANCHE, she roared, were public enemy number one, their recklessness tearing apart the very foundations of Midgar.

"5 gil," she hissed, holding out a calloused hand to the faces drawn close by her words. "That's all it takes to buy the truth. Information worth its weight in blood. Nothing's free in this cesspool, not even whispers."

And whispers there were, carried on the stench of despair and the acrid tang of burning rubber. Stories of houses swallowed whole, loved ones choked by dust and ash. Kyrie relished them, weaving them into her narrative, the ground beneath her feet a chorus of trembling voices. "The whole damn plate shook, they say," she snarled, eyes snapping across the crowd. "Shook like a leaf in a Shinra blizzard, all thanks to those eco-terrorists!"
