How To Beat Tonberry in FF7R Malicious Goons Sidequest | Final Fantasy 7 Remake Chapter 14 Quests
DO NOT underestimate the Malicious Goons side quest in Final Fantasy 7 Remake Chapter 14! 😱 It might SOUND easy! Yes, the goons you encountered so far were all a cakewalk. 😅 But attempting this side quest unprepared will result in a rude shock! 🚨 As you can see from my failed attempt here... I was expecting to smack a bunch of goons but got INSTANT DEATH instead by this Tonberry they threw at me. What is this, a wild Pokémon encounter?! 🤔
Ok, but first, let me guide you on how to unlock the Malicious Goons side quest...
Go to Madame M’s massage place at the Wall Market when you are in Chapter 14, and you will find her in Wall Market. Once she's done talking, fast travel to Sector 5 Slums Area, specifically the Sector 5 Undercity - Entrance. At this point, you should be fast traveling FOR FREE. 🎉 If you are still wasting precious gil on fast travel, just click on my missing Chocobo right here to unlock free fast travel... 🚀 Head towards Aerith's house and take a left into the open battle area where you previously fought Rude the Turk. Before you enter the area, it's time to gear up! Here is all the Materia and Equipment you should equip:
Warding + Subversion Materia
Revival Materia
First Strike Materia
Assess Materia
HP Up Materia(s)
Whistlewind Scarf for a partially filled ATB gauge at the start of battle
Healing Carcanet for the primary healer
Supernatural Wristguards for a strength boost
Item Master Materia for using potions and buffs
Once you're ready, approach the goons. They won't even fight you; they will just unleash the Tonberry on you. This is where the fun begins. 😈 Tonberry is notorious for its deceptively deadly attacks. The Chef's Knife attack and one of its spells cause instant death, so you'll game over really quick if you're not careful. Avoid standing directly in front of Tonberry and take advantage of its vulnerability after it misses a knife attack.
To counter Tonberry's instant death status, the Warding Materia + Subversion Materia combo I recommended earlier should grant you some immunity, ideally assigned to Cloud or your primary healer. Warding Materia at Level 1 grants a 25% chance to resist, Level 2 grants 50%, and Level 3 grants full immunity. Equip Revival Materia to the same character to revive unprotected party members.
Other than that:
Focus on using abilities.
Cast healing or revival spells from a safe distance.
Prioritize physical attacks, as magic attacks take longer to cast.
Move in a circle to avoid facing Tonberry directly.
Be aware that Tonberry may vanish and reappear elsewhere in the area as its health decreases, so watch out for that!
Ensure to Phoenix Down the character with Revival Materia equipped. If they die, use a Phoenix Down to revive them. And make sure the healer's MP is always replenished with ethers.
