Surgery is expensive and has considerable risk of complications, even elective surgeries. That's why we need proof that surgery is better than non-surgical treatment. I talked about a recent study that looked for level 1 evidence of the 10 most common elective orthopedic surgeries. For 8 of them - arthroscopic ACL reconstruction, arthroscopic partial meniscectomy, arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, arthroscopic subacromial decompression, lumbar spinal decompression for spinal canal stenosis, and spinal fusion for degenerative disc disease - randomized controlled trials showed similar outcomes to non-operative care.
