Can we now compose with virtual bass instruments without a bass or bass player?

Bass instruments play an increasing role as an alternative to recording a real bassist, which is why I call this ‘Bass without Bass’. There are sampled virtual Bass Instruments and many to choose from, so in this video I compare and demo some of the popular bass instruments from leading vendors. Each section walks through the basic functionality, I demo the presets and sprinkle in some song example from my own experience. It’s a deep dive into each instrument, so the video is lengthy and you can use the chapters to jump around.

In Part 1 I’m focused on electric and acoustic bass sounds, which are usually sampled instruments, but there are some ‘modelling’ bass instruments like MODO BASS 2 and some ROMpler sample players like Monster Bass that are equally effective. And, Native Instruments has released several bass instruments, each improving upon the last to be more realistic, more human and delivered with more patterns and options. I try to explain the differences of each generative method. In the next Part on Bass, I’ll tackle synthesized bass sounds used in EDM, Hip Hop and Pop genres as bass sounds continue to replace bass instruments in a lot of music today.
