Vladimir Putin’s reinvasion of Ukraine has failed to secure any of his original goals. Yet Putin is doubling down rather than looking for a way out. He has mobilized hundreds of thousands of Russians to fight and is pressing on despite horrific casualties. Ukrainians are even more resolved, fighting off waves of Russian soldiers, missiles, and drones; holding the Russians off; and fighting to liberate their people and land with Western help. Protracted war is not a stalemate, and much will change over the coming month and year.
