Jonathan Rosen will discuss The Best Minds: A Story of Friendship, Madness, and the Tragedy of Good Intentions (Penguin Press, 2023), a book about his friendship with Michael Laudor, whom he met when both were 10 and whose life spiraled into psychosis after college.
Held aloft by the media as a symbol of how people with schizophrenia can succeed, Mr. Laudor—who, while suffering delusions, excelled at Yale Law School—eventually showed that genius is no bulwark against unmedicated madness.
The “best minds” also belonged to literary and legal theorists and to public health authorities who put their utopian visions ahead of the vulnerable to create a system of laws and mental health institutions whose failures continue to reverberate.
The Best Minds, an American tragedy, underscores the comforting fictions society still tells itself about severe mental illness.
