Charge a NiCad pack of 4 cells to 5 Volt. Basic circuit for AC/DC & about the basics of charging

Please read the description first for more background information.

I show here how to charge a pack of 4 Ni-Cad Cells from VARTA, a key brand out of Germany. Get to say out 5 Volts. 4 x 1.2 Volt (standard voltage of a Ni-Cd cell) is (in the best case) 4.8 Volt. That voltage is nowadays often used in (small) computers topology, say the Arduino, the Raspberry, etc.

I show here the pure “basics” (in terms of electrical/electronic) charging and not a sophisticated circuit, with a constant current source, etc.

Aim is to show the principles of charging Ni-Cad cells or (even) other cells, say Lead-Acid types. Ohms Law is valid here & don’t get me wrong.

The current to these cells (also a probably constant current and its effect) is (also) realized by the healthyness of the NiCad Cells (or other type of cells) that you use.

When 1 or 2 (or some of them in that or another row) are not OK, it will have an effect on how this (a) charger will work. And how its (max) energy output of such a bunch of cells will/can work. That is logical in electronics/electrochemistry terms.

And the cause is always: how do the individual cells act (not the charger….). By their individual chemical process, in a row of cells.

Each one must be “healthy”, precise values to send a current of “X” amp. in, realizing a storage of “X” Watts/Joules, and how that energy storage can be taken out properly.

At the moment still a flaw when we look at the Li-Ion battteries of electrical vehicles/cars (say TESLA etc.) And thus still not a properly solved electrical/electrochemistry problem, anyway, regarding what is happening nowadays. In electrochemistry terms this problem is very (!) complicated. Thus: no problems with (such) (a) charge circuit, the problems are on the electrochemical level. Chargers must/could be made (perhaps in the future) to align in a very specific way to the electrochemical problems of these (or other types of) battery cells.

Focus is always on the health of the individual cells. This regards also to (say) a TESLA automobile battery, though (almost) no one understands that. Sorry for that.

But, talking about the/that case in this/my video; Situation must be (like I told to get X Volts and X current constantly out): 4 identical Ni-Cad cells, all healthy, identical, mounted on date X (moment) and then, when charged via that 5 mA option can/will work for many years.

Other options: charge the cells to their maximum load (talked about it in the video). And use its energy (the pack) for “X” hours or so. That depends on the properties of the used Ni-Cad cells, say that they can store the energy content that you want and need.
