The rumors are right, apple has made a RED iPhone which went on sale today and i just went and got one.
I was under the impressions that it would be a limited edition phone and will be very hard to get my hands on, but nothing of that sort happened. There were no queues in front of the apple store, no delays on online orders and no drama what so ever. It was as quite as Christmas morning.
They had plenty of phones in stock, so waiting for the website to become active and reserving the phone online was a waste of my time.
Nothing new about the package, except that it has the image of the red iPhone in front. The words “product red” are inscribed on the image of the phone. Other wise, its all same as the other iPhone 7 and 7 plus boxes.
We have the easy pull tab on the back to remove the wrapper. I remember the days when we had to pierce our nails through the wrapper to tear it open.
Lifting the box by its top, presents the dramatic slow opening of the box itself. Inside we have the ‘designed by apple in California envelope’. Inside that, we have some information on product red and how the proceeds go into HIV research. you can pause this video to read it. Then we have the usual, welcome to iPhone guide, sim tray eject pin, the information page and a couple of apple stickers.
Lifting the phone by its tab revels the wall adapter and the ear pods. Beneath the EarPods, we have the lighting to aux adapter and the lightning charging cable. All in the usual white, nothing new about them.
now to the main attraction, the phone itself. The front is white with a silver ring around the home button. These are the same parts they must have used when building a silver iPhone.
Pealing the film revels the back. I expected this to be good looking, but it some how manages to surprise me. it is even better looking than i expected it to be.
I don’t know how much justice the camera is doing to this colour, but it is a very saturated red. the matte finish on the anodised aluminium makes this look really classy. It definitely feels high quality.
As i move it across the light, you can see the soft shimmer like satin. If Ferrari were a phone company, this is what their phones should look like.
I know the internet has been going crazy on how the front of this phone should have been black, it is true. The front of the phone does not do justice to its back. But product red devices have always been in the red and white combination, i am not sure this is going to change anytime soon.
The apple logo on the back has a mirrored finish with a slight tint of black to it. Because of the matte finish, the back of the phone does not attract any finger prints. I have a jet black iPhone 7 plus, major finger print magnet, but i would still prefer it to the red one. The seamless glossiness across the front and the back, make the jet black variant very special.
I don’t think there are any phones that come in a red colour, so people who own a red iPhone and who dare to use it without a case, will definitely stand out. If you slap a case on this, there not much of the red that is visible. The front is completely white, and there is a little red peaking out of the camera slot and the charging port.
Black makes any other colour stand out very sharply, It is that good colour that is ok to stay in the shadows to make the other colours look good. Take my logo for instance, the florescent green is eye catchy on its owe, but the black enhances it all the more. The red iPhone with a black front would have looked good. Changing the silver ring to red on the home button would be a fine touch.
it is the first iPhone in red, i know the iPhone 5c came in colours, but red was not one of them. I checked, it only came in (blue, green, yellow, pink and white). So now the iPhone 7 and 7 plus come in 6 different colours. Silver, gold, rose gold, black, jet black and now red.
Apple have stated that this is a more saturated red than any of the other red products they have made so far. Comparing this phone with a second generation iPod nano, you can see that it is true.
Most of us who wanted an iPhone 7 plus would have already got it 6 months ago. Launching this phone now, is not fair on the people who might have wanted this phone and also not fair on the people with HIV. More sales of the red phone would have meant more money to the charity. But anyways, its for a good cause, and apple has been helping this charity for ages.
On a lighter note, I think Apple have done a good thing in bringing a phone with some real colour without it involving too much plastic. I think they should do more, like they did with the iPods. I am sure Samsung will be copying this very soon.
This has been the unboxing of the iPhone 7 plus product red. Thanks for watching, take care.
