There is an easy to understand classification of foods into healthy foods to maximize, less healthy foods to minimize and even less unhealthy foods to avoid: The traffic light food system by Dr. Michael Greger from nutritionfacts.org!

The green-light foods include unprocessed plant foods. "Unprocessed" mean, in this case, that nothing bad has been added, and nothing good was taken away. Unprocessed plant foods include fruits, vegetables, intact grains, legumes, nuts & seeds, but also vinegar, cacao powder, date sugar and fermented foods!

Yellow-light foods include processed plant foods and unprocessed animal products. There are many processed plant foods, including tofu, plant based milks, some healthier mock meats,... that are completely fine to eat regularly, in reasonable amounts. Unprocessed animal products include hard-boiled eggs, milk and unprocessed meat (not processed, not cured, not fried or broiled).

Red-light foods include ultra-processed plant foods and processed animal products. Ultra-processed means; lots of salt, oil & sugar added, for example cookies, dry snacks, sweets,... Processed animal products include fried eggs, cheese and most regularly consumed meat products.

This classification can be a great guide on your health journey! For more informatio, here is the video by Dr. Greger:
