Atlantic Silver Hatchetfish (Argyropelecus aculeatus) has upward-facing tubular eyes and photophores that help it eliminate its shadow when viewed from below, achieving counter-illumination camouflage. A study found that in the Gulf of Mexico, these fish consume large amounts of copepods and ostracods as juveniles. However, as they grow larger, they proportionally shift to eating more euphausiids, mollusks, and small fish.
