This emotional brain system is responsible for bonding and relationships. Good to know for your connection with your horse, right?
The CARE system highly active in looking after young, but also in creating bonds between adult animals, such as herd mammals like horses.
Behaviours associated with this system are licking, mutual grooming, toughing, close spatial arrangements, mimicking others’ behaviour, sharing food and eating together. It feels good, and horses will prefer to spend time with other horses and humans they have experienced CARE with. This is an important part of training and building a bond with your horse.
In this second video in the series, Rachel explores the CARE system in both horse behaviour and in training situations with you.
