It can be so stressful when your horse is frightened of the vet - it’s horrible for you, your horse and your vet! Triana is not a fan of vets or injections, so here you can see some injection training in action.
Adding in a second person is often a trigger for many horses, so it’s a good step to include in vet preparation. Your horse might be relaxed with you touching and prodding them but more anxious or reactive with other people. Bringing in other people to act as the vet or farrier etc in a training situation builds up positive associations with new people. You can have them practice the behaviours, as well as other triggers such as wearing latex gloves or farriery chaps. Don’t forget to have them practice lots of fun, no-pressure behaviours with your horse, too, to make an even stronger association of new people = fun.
You might also note in this video that Triana is being trained with hay. She has hay piles freely available, too (much of which she has strewn around). This helps to give her plenty of choice in the situation and means she’s not going to put herself over threshold for the food. Since she has a history of biting when being injected, this is really important for everyone. It shows that the training is fun and stimulating in its own right.
This was filmed at our Coaches training course in 2023 Rachel and Claire’s place in Spain, with Sharen Ross and Miki hara doing some beautiful training together.
