We often want to compare the heat flowing into a system with its change in temperature. There are two types of heat capacities: constant volume (where no work is done on the system) and constant pressure (where the system is free to expand or contract.) We can calculate the heat capacity of many things based solely on our understanding of the equipartition theorem and degrees of freedom.
