A shoulder dislocation is a traumatic injury that occurs when the head of the humerus (upper arm bone) comes out of its socket in the shoulder joint. The initial treatment involves putting the shoulder back in place, a short period of immobilization to decrease pain, and physical therapy to restore range of motion. Young patients often develop recurrent instability and often need surgical treatment.
