The Philippines(the country in South East Asia) is spelled with a PH. But somebody from the Philippines(a Filipino) is spelled with an F.

Why?

It's simple, really!
Not many people know this, but the F in Filipino is actually to pay respects to the lives lost when the archipelago was colonized.

Like many other countries in the region, the Philippines used to be a European colony. In this case, it’s a former Spanish colony.

The country’s name in Spanish is Las Islas Filipinas- named after the late 16th century Spanish king; King Philip (or Felipe in Spanish) II.

The name “Philippines” is the Anglicized version of this name. And it’s also the name the Filipino government uses.

You’ll notice that the Spanish name “Las Islas Filipinas” along with its name sake “King Felipe” is spelled with an F.

Since the Philippines used to be a Spanish colony, somebody living in the Philippines would have been a Spanish individual. So a Spanish individual using the Spanish language to describe his citizenship would have used Filipino with an F.

That’s where the spelling of Filipino with an F came from.

It’s the Spanish spelling of a person living in the Philippines with a PH. The group of islands which retained the Anglicized (English) spelling of its name.
